This is an example of one of the many reasons you may be grounded:

If a child or teenager in your household pranks the sink or computer.. etc, etc.. (I won't tell you what happens when you prank various items and the unlucky sim uses the item, it'll be more funny at the time.) and then a sim in your household (maybe a parent or grandparent?) uses the the pranked item and then the prank annoys them, which then leads to them storming over and grounding the child that did it. (I have no idea how they know xD) You can't stop the adult grounding the kid, it just happens. Then, the kid is stuck in the house and they can't do fun stuff like watch TV and play on the computer. If they try and escape the house, they are put in time out where they stand against the wall in a huff untill their time is up. You can, however, persuade the adult to free you from your punishment and then you are able to do the fun stuff again. (Sometimes though, the adult might have a bad relationship with the kids and the adult doesn't free the kid from their punishment. If that happens, the kid is grounded for a while and then the adult frees them.)
